    Denim: Italian Heritage

    4 Dec 2023

Italy is widely regarded as the producer of the most prestigious denim garments in the world, thanks to the premium fabrics and artisanal experience that dates to the 19th century.

The manufacturers’ passion for authenticity is what made the art of denim production a “Made in Italy” excellence, where technology and innovation meet traditions passed down through generations. The result is garments that exude artisanal details and are durable and luxurious.

Over the years, Luca Faloni has nurtured a collaborative relationship with Albini, a family-owned business with over a century of textile experience in the world of denim. Today, Albini - with its brand Albiate 1830 - is the leader in creating premium quality denim with an eye on sustainability and Italian tradition. Sharing a passion for authenticity, we aim at promoting Italian denim craftsmanship with superior quality garments.

With almost 150 years of experience in denim production, Albiate 1830, a brand of Albini, is one of the most renowned Italian denim producers worldwide. Founded in 1876 in Albino (Bergamo), the family-owned business never stopped innovating, bringing to life garments that are an expression of contemporary and deep-rooted Italian taste for decades.

The strong links with the territory and the short production chain ensure Albini’s products are in line with the premium standards the company envisions. The artisanal know-how of the Italian manufacturer meets the most innovative production methods to guarantee ethical and sustainable production methods.

    How Denim Is Made

    Cotton selection

The structure of this family-owned business ensures Albini can oversee all stages of the production process, from selecting the raw material to the final quality control. Here, a dedicated team carefully selects the best cotton worldwide, thanks to a network of business partnerships developed over generations.

    Spinning

Spinning is the process that combines the separate fibres into a high-quality yarn. The quality of the raw material is fundamental to ensure the yarn meets the high standards Luca Faloni and Albini require. Once the spinning process is complete, all yarns need to pass standard controls, including humidity check, the staple length, the twist, strength, elongation and regularity.

    Dyeing

The dyeing process is what gives denim the indigo colour we’re all familiar with and requires up to 12 hours to complete. The first step is to eliminate the fibre impurities, followed by the actual dyeing process, which takes place in autoclaves, where the colourants penetrate deeply into the fibres.

The main characteristic of denim is it tends to lose colour over time, creating a one-of-a-kind wear pattern that makes each garment unique with shades of blue and black.

    Weaving

The weaving process includes several steps: winding, warping, sizing, drawing-in and finally, weaving. The final step is carried out on highly technological weaving looms by expert artisans to ensure the denim is up to the high standards Albini is known for.

The quality of raw materials and the artisans’ creativity really come into play in these final steps of the production process, where experienced craftsmen work in a controlled environment to bring the finest fabrics to life.

    Quality control

The quality of the fabric is controlled twice: during the weaving phase and at the end of the process, with a final fabric inspection. Both times, skilled artisans check each meter of fabric thoroughly, removing minor defects and ensuring the material is perfect and ready to be sent to Brebbia (VA) for finishing.

The know-how of experienced workers, combined with cutting-edge technology, guarantees that Luca Faloni’s garments are always made with premier quality denim that combines the inimitable Italian heritage with a sustainable and innovative approach.
