The Portofino Linen Shirt: Crafting Excellence

The millennial history of linen defined human culture, thanks to its natural breathability and durability, which made it a formidable garment untouched by fashion trends, exuding elegance in all its forms.

Over the centuries, artisans learned how to master and refine this precious textile, making it the epitome of timeless class through clothes that speak of creativity, culture, and dedication to sartorial excellence.

Inspired by the rich Italian tradition of working with the best fabrics in the world, Luca Faloni forged partnerships with the most experienced local artisans to bring to life a linen shirt that reflects the unique Italian heritage.

The story of our Portofino Linen Shirt is grounded on local know-how and craftsmanship but with an eye on the future, embracing the values of sustainability and uttermost quality that transforms Portofino into a work of art and manifesto of excellence.

    Linen Culture

Northern Italy is home to some of the oldest textile mills in Europe. For centuries, crafting the perfect garment was a family business, with precious knowledge passed on from one generation to the next, refining a unique craft in a thriving culture of local tradition and heritage.

Over the years, Luca Faloni has partnered with local mills and artisans who honour the tradition of their craft and source materials of the highest quality worldwide. For the Portofino Linen Shirt, we collaborate with one of the most respected mills in Italy, which relies on five generations of textile excellence and a passion for innovation to redefine the modern Made in Italy.

With 140 years of experience in crafting the best fabrics, combined with a global vision to magnify the uniqueness of Italian tradition, our partners help us bring our creations to life, adding their expertise and artistry to a garment designed to last a lifetime.

    Portofino Paramontura Collar

Featuring Luca Faloni’s signature "Paramontura" collar, the Portofino exudes class and elegance in any environment. The collar is cut from a single piece of fabric, extending through the front torso and creating a placket.

As a result, the collar can stand on its own and create a cleaner and refined sartorial effect. Made using pure Italian linen and crafted in Northern Italy by combining tradition and innovative techniques, the Portofino is Luca Faloni’s way of celebrating the exceptional heritage of Italian craftsmanship.

    Mother-of-pearl Buttons

The iridescence of mother-of-pearl buttons adorning the Portofino enhances the qualities of our linen shirt. Carved from oyster shells, the Australian mother of pearl used for the Portofino is highly durable and creates a mesmerising display of intricate patterns and swirls, evoking nature’s inherent beauty.

The smooth and cool touch of the mother-of-pearl against the crisp linen fabric adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. These buttons elevate the aesthetic allure of the shirt, instilling a sense of luxury and refinement.

    Giglio Stitching

This unique stitching technique represents the embodiment of Italian sartorial tradition, enhancing the exclusive feel of the mother-of-pearl buttons and creating an evocative fleur motif surrounding them.

Resistant and pleasant to the touch, the Giglio stitching is a distinctive feature of Luca Faloni’s garments, which requires skilled hands and adds a subtle yet elegant detail to our Portofino shirt.

Linen: The Beautifully Enigmatic Material for the Summer

When it comes to staying cool in summer heat, whilst maintaining elegance, linen is king. Despite this, it remains a surprisingly rare material, especially in menswear. In part, this is due to its higher cost compared to cotton, but also because linen polarises opinion due to its propensity to crease.

The sartorial history of the Anglosphere is somehow opposed to creases, which are anathema to the rigidly suited style associated with traditional gentlemen. Yet as swathes of discerning Italian and French men have proved, a slightly crumpled effect can be a nonchalantly sophisticated look in warmer climates.

It just requires knowing the properties of linen and how to get the most out of this fine material. In this article, we briefly explore the history of linen, its excellent properties and how best to wear it.
